Ok, first few tests done. Picked 2 nodes at random and they turned out to be
Cork suburbs to Dublin suburbs. All 3 methods got from A to B, unfortunately
all 3 considered walls and fields to be acceptable routes. This really does
look like errors in the osm data as the correct route is clearly visible but
the routing engines took legible routes through dead-end housing estates close
to major roads.
All 3 engines favored direct routes through business and residential areas
over long loops on main roads around them and all 3 made impossible jumps out
of single entrance rats nest residential areas if they got trapped.
Most of the problems regarding major and minor roads should be just a matter
of tweaking configurations but there are clearly a lot of faults in the osm
data for routing, mainly in business and residential backwaters but a few
showed up on major roads too.
Not tried inner city yet but it is definitely usable for town to town routing.
Alternative routing methods are using the same algorithms and data so I can't
really see them being a whole lot better. If the database is restricted to
larger roads and streets then a lot of the errors will be avoided and the
loading time will be quartered but at the cost of 'to your door' directions.
Anyway, I'll get back to tweaking.
cheers
