There is a workaround: use compiz.
In Ubuntu, some testing reveals a window manager specific problem.
If I use compiz, everything works.
If I use Metacity,or xfwm4 (for blender, and etc.), Cinelerra is frozen, and
the only controls that work are the controls in the tip dialog.
(Note: XFWM4 has a composting manager. When enabled, it still doesn't work.)
